IT'S OFFICIAL, ALCESTE CATELLA IS CASALE'S NEW BISHOP

At 4:45 p.m. Sunday in the cathedral at Biella, mons. Alceste Catella was consecrated bishop with the laying on of the hands of Turin archbishop Severino Poletto, of Vercelli's archbishop Enrico Masseroni, of Biella's bishop Gabriele Mena and then of the entire Piemontese episcopate. There were 24 bishops present from Piemonte and the Valle d'Aosta, including emeritus ones from Biella and Alessandria and the bishop of Piacenza Gianni Ambrosio.

In his homily, cardinal Poletto said, turning to mons. Catella: "in your future I see a triangle dedicated to the Madonna, the one of Fatima where last November we suddenly lost your predecessor mons. Zaccheo that today will follow us from heaven, the one of Oropa, sanctuary of which you were rector and the one of Crea, which for the Casalesi remains the true sacred mount..."

The ceremony concluded at 6:15 p.m. Among those present were 500 faithful from every town in the Monferrato, guided by their mayors and parish priests. Also present was Paolo Filippi, president of the Province of Alessandria.

Mons. Catella will officially enter his diosces of Casale on the first Sunday of September.

Nella cattedrale di Biella alle 16,45 di domenica, mons. Alceste Catella e' stato consacrato vescovo con l'imposizione delle mani del cardinale arcivescovo di Torino Severino Poletto, del metropolita di Vercelli Enrico Masseroni del vescovo di Biella Gabriele Mena e poi dell'intero episcopato piemontese. Erano presenti 24 vescovi di Piemonte e Valle d'Aosta tra cui gli emeriti di di Biella e Alessandria e il vescovo di Piacenza Gianni Ambrosio.

Nella sua omelia il cardinale Poletto ha detto, rivolto a mons. Catella: "per il tuo futuro vedo un triangolo dedicato alla Madonna, quella di Fatima dove nel novembre scorso e' improvvisamente mancato il tuo predecessore mons. Zaccheo che oggi ci seguirà dal Paradiso, quella di Oropa santuario di cui fosti rettore e quella di Crea che per i casalesi rimane il vero sacro Monte...".

La cerimonia si e'conclusa alle 18,15. Tra i presenti cinquecento fedeli di tutti i paesi del Monferrato guidati dai loro sindaci e dai loro parroci, presente anche il presidente della Provincia di Alessandria Paolo Filippi.

Mons. Catella entrera' ufficialmente nella "sua" diocesi di Casale la prima domenica di settembre.

MORBELLI IN LONDON

"Radical Light: Italy's Divisionist Painters 1891-1910" is the name of a big exhibition open until Sept. 7 at London's National Gallery. On the cover of the catalog one can see "In the Rice Fields," a masterwork by painter Angelo Morbelli, the Divisionist master that had his favorite studio at Villa Maria in Colma di Rosignano.

At the London opening were brothers Alessandro and Marco Morbelli -- sons of Robert, the great-grandson of the painter -- and Maurizio Gaidino for the Amis dla Curma, the association that in May promoted an educational tour in Colma for English journalists, guided by Thomas Almeroth-Williams, head of the National Gallery's press office. When the Morbelli came home they started seeing the first critical reviews of the show in the London press, which called Angelo's paintings "protagonists" of the exhibition.

The show includes 60 works -- including eight by Morbelli -- from museums across Europe and America but also from private collections around the globe. They illustrate the evolution of Divisionism, a movement that is being re-evaluated around the world. The exhibition also appeared at New York's Guggenheim Museum in 2007.

"Radical Light: Italy's Divisionist Painters 1891-1910" e' il titolo di una grande mostra aperta fino al 7 settembre alla National Gallery di Londra. In copertina del catalogo figura "In the rice fields" ("In risaia") uno dei capolavori di Angelo Morbelli il maestro del Divisionismo che a Villa Maria, alla Colma di Rosignano aveva il suo studio preferito.

All'inaugurazione a Londra erano presenti, invitati, i fratelli Alessandro e Marco Morbelli (figli di Roberto, il pittore era il suo bisnonno) e Maurizio Gaidino per gli Amis dla Curma, associazione che aveva promosso a meta' maggio un educational tour alla Colma presenti molti giornalisti inglesi guidati da Thomas Almeroth-Williams, capo ufficio stampa della National Gallery. Al ritorno alla famiglia Morbelli sono giunte le prime critiche dei giornali inglesi che segnalano i quadri di Angelo come "protagonisti" della rassegna.

La mostra ospita sessanta quadri (e otto sono di Morbelli) provenienti da musei europei e americani ma anche da collezioni private in tutto il mondo; illustrano l'evoluzione del Divisionismo  un movimento che si sta rivalutando in tutto il mondo.

CONFERENCE DISCUSSES ARTISTIC PATRIMONY OF CASALE DIOCESE

There was broad participation Tuesday in a conference at Crea entitled, "The Electronic Inventory of the Artistic Patrimony of the Diocese of Casale."

Signaling the conclusion of a great work, useful for the guardianship of the diocesan patrimony, was the announcement of notable figures: there were more than 24,988 cards (one for each work) created and there were 27,000 related photos. This immense patrimony -- collected on a CD -- is maintained almost entirely in the innumerable churches in the Monferrato Casalese and Astigiano.

The conference was launched with a salute by Mons. Francesco Mancinelli, rector of Crea, by Don Renato Dalla Costa, who oversees the diocese's sacred art, and by Mons. Antonio Gennaro, diocesan administrator, who read the letter of participation from Mons. Alceste Catella, Casale's new bishop.

The works were brought to life in the inaugural lectore by Mons. Giancarlo Santi, director of Milan's diocesan museum and inventor of the card catalog system. He spoke of "patrimony in 26,000 Italian parishes that is a testament to the history of our communities. Until today reserved for a few and undefended, it is up to us to protect them and keep them for posterity."

The inventory, beyond protection, is also useful for the promotion of tourism and can be used to teach religion for research (along with the CEI's database).

Si e' tenuto martedi' a Crea con larga partecipazione il convegno "L'inventariazione informatizzata dei beni artistici mobili della diocesi di Casale".

Ha segnato la conclusione di un gran lavoro, utilissimo per la tutela del patrimonio diocesano, che fa segnare cifre notevoli: sono state realizzate ben 24.988 schede (ognuna per ogni bene) corredate da 27 mila foto. Un patrimonio immenso tracchiuso in un Cd, che emerge quasi tutto dalle innumerevoli chiese del Monferrato casalese e astigiano.

Il convegno e' iniziato con il saluto di mons. Francesco Mancinelli, rettore di Crea, di don Renato Dalla Costa responsabile diocesano arte sacra e di mons. Antonio Gennaro amministratore diocesano che ha letto la lettera di partecipazione di mons. Alceste Catella, vescovo incaricato di Casale.

I lavori sono entrati nel vivo con la prolusione di Mons. Giancarlo Santi, direttore del museo diocesano di Milano, inventore della scheda di catalogazione. Ha parlato di "patrimonio in 26 mila parrocchie italiane che testimonia la storia delle nostre comunita'. Fino ad oggi riservato a pochi eletti e indifeso, Tocca noi tutelarlo e consegnarlo ai posteri..."

L'inventario oltre che per la tutela aiuta la promozione turistica, si puo' usare per l'insegnamento della religione e per la ricerca (insieme alla banca dati della CEI).

"FESTA ALBANESE" AT CASALE'S OYOYOY JEWISH CULTURE FESTIVAL

Included in the Jewish Cultural Festival, OyOyOy, organized by Monferrato Cult on Saturday night, was a successful Albanese Festival ceremony, begun at the San Giorgio town hall with the dedication of an olive "Justice Tree," dedicated to Albania, the one country under Nazi-Fascist domination that did not deport Jews. The ceremony was attended by Paolo Mascarino, mayor of Casale, Giovanni Firera representing the Albanian Consulate in Turin, and other honored guests, such as Mustafa Nano, the popular Albanese TV anchorman, and Mito Baka, director of the "Koha Jone" newspaper.

Journalist Silvana Mossno recalled those days in 1991 when Casale provided hospitality to 1,000 Albanian refugees for 36 hours.

Historian Roberta Barazza recalled the extraordinary fact that Albania was the only European country in which all the Jews were saved during the Nazi period. Not by chance, there were more Jews in Albania following WWII than before the war. Many emigrated there to find refuge from the Nazi and Fascist violence.

In 1990, Tom Lantous and Joe DioGuardi, ex- US Congressmen and the first officials to visit Albania in 50 years, had the permission of dictator Ramiz Alia to see for the first time archived letters, documents, and testimonies related to the Jewish survivors of fascism and Nazism in Albania.

DioGuardi sent many of these documents to Israel, where they were judged authentic by Yad Vashed, the governing body of the Memory of the Heroes and Martyrs of the Holocaust. Interest developed in these historical facts and the stories of others were told. Today, the museum contains the traces of almost 2,000 Jews in Albania, who were spared from deportation

Late 2007 marked the opening of an exhibit of photos by Norman Gershman, who traveled to Albania and the Balcans searching for testimony of the people involved. On the Day of Memory on Jan. 27, 2008, the exhibit was brought to the UN Headquarters in New York. "Things We Knew Nothing About" was highlighted by Giorgio Ottolenghi in an emotional expression of appreciation.

The feast of Casalese-Albanian integration continued in the hall of honor, located on the first floor of the palace with the attendance of Giovanni Villari and Andrea Riscassi. The Italian-Albanian consul concluded: "Today, this historic hall honors your work and sacrifice."

Later, everyone dined on Birek and other Albanian specialties prepared in the town courtyard. The evening finale took place at the exhibition by Fanfara Tirana in Santa Croce. More than 500 tickets were purchased by equal numbers of Albanians and Italians, who were practically indistinguishable as they danced together.

At noon on Saturday, Consul Gianni Firera with journalist Mustafa Nano and Milto Baka, accompanied by editor Antonio Monaco and by Edoardo Balocco, vice president of the Italo-Albanese Association of the Province of Alexandria, visited the home office of the Il Monferrato.

Nell'ambito del Festival di cultura ebraica OyOyOy organizzato da Monferrato Cult sabato sera si e' tenuta una riuscita "Festa albanese". Cerimonia iniziata a palazzo San Giorgio (Comune) con la dedica di un 'Albero dei Giusti' (un ulivo) all'Albania, unico tra i paesi sotto il dominio nazifascista a non deportare ebrei, alla presenza del sindaco di Casale Paolo Mascarino, del Console Generale di Albania a Torino Giovanni Firera e di altri illustri ospiti come Mustafa Nano, popolare ancorman della televisione albanese e Mito Baka direttore del quotidiano "Koha Jone".

La giornalista Silvana Mossano ricorda quei giorni del 1991 quando Casale in 36 ore dette ospitalita' a 1000 profughi albanesi A Roberta Barazza, storica, il ricordo di un fatto straordinario: l'Albania e' il solo paese europeo in cui tutti gli Ebrei sono stati salvati durante il periodo nazista. Non a caso, dopo la II Guerra Mondiale, vi erano in Albania piu' Ebrei di quanti vi fossero prima della guerra; molti vi emigrarono per trovare rifugio dalla violenza fascista e nazista.

Nel 1990 Tom Lantos e Joe DioGuardi, ex-membri del Congresso Americano e primi uomini di stato americani ad entrare in Albania dopo 50 anni, hanno il permesso del dittatore Ramiz Alia di vedere per la prima volta gli archivi storici contenenti lettere, documenti e testimonianze relative agli Ebrei sopravvissuti al fascismo e al nazismo in Albania.

DioGuardi manda molti di questi documenti in Israele, dove vengono considerati autentici dal Yad Vashem, l'autorita' dedita alla Memoria degli Eroi e dei Martiri dell'Olocausto.

Da questo momento cresce l'interesse per questi fatti storici e vengono raccolte molte altre testimonianze. Alla fine del 2007 si apre a Gerusalemme la mostra fotografica del fotografo ebreo-americano Norman Gershman, che aveva viaggiato in Albania e nei Balcani alla ricerca delle testimonianze delle persone coinvolte. Nel Giorno della Memoria, il 27 gennaio 2008, la mostra viene portata nel Palazzo delle Nazioni Unite, a New York.

"Cose di cui non si sapeva nulla" come ha sottolineato anche il presidente della comunita' ebraica casalese Giorgio Ottolenghi in un commosso ringraziamento.

Poi la Festa dell'integrazione Casale-Albania e' continuata nel salone d'onore al primo piano del palazzo con gli intervento di livello di Giovanni Villari e di Andrea Riscassi (allo Yad Vashem, museo della memoria israeliano, si sono ricostruite le tracce di almeno 2000 ebrei in Albania salvati dalla deportazione).

Conclusione dal console agli abanesi-casalesi: "Questa sala storica oggi onora il vostro lavoro e i vostri sacrifici" Poi tutti a mangiare Birek e altre specialita' albanesi preparati nel cortile del comune e gran finale alla sera in Santa Croce per l'esibizione di Fanfara Tirana. Oltre 500 biglietti venduti equamente divisi (tra albanesi e italiani) praticamente indistinguibili, balli in comune.

Alle 12 di sabato il console Gianni Firera coi giornalisti Mustafa Nano e Milto Baka accompagnati dall'editore Antonio Monaco e da Edoardo Balocco (vice presidente della associazione Italo-Albanese della provincia di Alessandria) hanno visitato la redazione del bisettimanale "Il Monferrato".

UMBERTO ECO IS GUEST OF HONOR AT GIOANOLA BOOK LAUNCH

Umberto Eco was the guest of honor at the palace of Monferrato di Alessandria during the presentation of "Maino della Spinette, re di Marengo and imperatore delle Alpi" (Jaka Book, Milano 2008), the latest novel by Elio Gioanola.

The presentation was led by President Gianfranco Pittatore, who stated that the objectives of the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Alessandria include the appreciation and the promotion of greater Alexandria and its cultural, historical, and artistic patrimony -- a patrimony that includes the exploits of the celebrated character of Gioanola's novel, Maino della Spinetta, who became a bandit as an act of rebellion against the French domination and mandatory draft of young Alexandrians.

Proud of having one of the great Italian storytellers at his side, Gioanola said that he had visited this hybrid theme previously in Pirandello's Story. It starts with precise documentation, as if everything were true, although when one writes, one lies, then the staging falls to reveal the face of the building. And this is the main reason for which he was the critic, not the storyteller, like the volcanic "affabulatore" seated at his side.

The author finished by reading two pages from the novel.

E' stato Umberto Eco l'ospite d'onore della presentazione al pubblico a palazzo del Monferrato di Alessandria dell'ultimo romanzo di Elio Gioanola "Maino della Spinetta, re di Marengo e imperatore delle Alpi (Jaka Book, Milano 2008), che si e' tenuta venerdi' scorso a Palazzo Monferrato di Alessandria. L'iniziativa e' stata presentata dal Presidente Gianfranco Pittatore che ha ricordato, tra gli obiettivi della Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Alessandria, la valorizzazione e la promozione del territorio e quindi del patrimonio culturale, storico e artistico dell'alessandrino, comprese le vicende del celebre protagonista del romanzo di Gioanola, Maino della Spinetta, figura popolare di un giovane ribelle, divenuto brigante come atto di rivolta contro la dominazione francese e la coscrizione obbligatoria dei giovani alessandrini.

Orgoglioso di avere al suo fianco uno dei grandi narratori italiani, Elio Gioanola ha dichiarato di aver altre volte frequentato questo genere ibrido, non ultimo nel recente "Pirandello's story". Si parte da una documentazione precisa, come se tutto fosse vero, anche se quando si scrive si mente, ha aggiunto Gioanola, poi cadono le impalcature e l'edificio presenta il suo prospetto. E questa e' la ragione principale per cui ha fatto il critico e non il narratore, come il vulcanico affabulatore seduto al suo fianco. E' seguita la lettura daparte dell'autore di due pagine del romanzo.

CASALE GETS A NEW BISHOP

Mons. Alceste Catella -- born in Tavigliano, near Biella, on May 5, 1942 -- is the new bishop of the Dioces of Casale. The announcement was made at noon in the Duomo by the diocesan administrator Mons. Antonio Gennaro and it was received with rousing applause the many people who crowded into the cathedral. At the same time, the bells of all the parishes in the dioces rang out in celebration.

Mons. Catella had served as vicar general of the Dioces of Biella, rector of the Sanctuary at Oropa and presided over the University of S. Giustina of Padua. Catella follows, then, in the footsteps of his predecessor Germano Zaccheo who before becoming bishop of Casale had served as vicar general in the Dioces of Novara. All that remains now is to agree upon Mons. Catella's consecration as bishop and his entrance into the Dioces.

Mons. Alceste Catella (nato a Tavigliano, nel biellese il 5 maggio 1942) e' il nuovo vescovo della diocesi di Casale. L'annuncio e' stato dato a mezzogiorno in Duomo dall'amministratore diocesano mons. Antonio Gennaro ed e' stato accolto da un grande applauso dai numerosi presenti che hanno affollato la cattedrale. Nello stesso momenti le campane delle parrocchie della diocesi hanno suonate a festa.

Ha ricoperto l'incarico vicario generale della diocesi di Biella, di rettore del Santuario di Oropa ed e' stato preside dell'Universita' di S. Giustina di Padova. Con Catella si ripete quello che e' successo per Germano Zaccheo il quale, prima di diventare vescovo della diocesi di Casale, aveva l'incarico di vicario generale della diocesi di Novara. Ora si concorderanno i tempi della consacrazione vescovile e dell'ingresso in Diocesi.

LONDON MEETS THE DIVISIONISTS

At "Villa Maria," in Colma, a hamlet in the municipality of Rosignano, in Valle Ghenza, the large studio of the famous Divisionist painter Angelo Morbelli has been restored to the way it appeared a century ago thanks to photos from the era taken by Francesco Negri and thanks also to the hard work of of Annita Rosso of the "Amis dla Curma."

A dive into the history of art sparked by the fact that from June 18 until September 7, the prestigious National Gallery of London hosts the shoe, "Divionists. Radical Light: Italy's Divisionist Painters 1891-1910" in which there are a good eight paintings on view by the Monferrino artist. So began, thanks to Thomas Almeroth-Williams, head of the National Gallery press office, an educational tour that brought to Colma a group of English journalists and art experts including, beyond Alneroth, Antony Spawforth (sent by "The Times" newspaper), Laura Gascoigne, Helen Sumpter, e Christopher Riopelle and Simonetta Fraquelli.

It was an honor to be, along with the English colleagues, "the first to see Angelo's studio restored. In Colma, the guests (which had arrived from Volpedo, where they visited Pellizza's studio), were welcomed by the man of the house, Roberto Morbelli (great-nephew of the painter).

The visit to the studio was emotional, with the notebooks, the colors, the lounge chair (used in many paintings), the easel, the sheets and the large window looking out over the valley and the hills; those hills that were the background of so many paintings.

Next, a visit to the Civic Museum of Casale, whose paintings gallery includes a large collection of works by Morbelli, lent by the family of Robert. And, finally, an official dinner at the castle in Uviglie (from which Colma can be seen...) with another admiration of the landscape and the medieval wine cellar.

Final salutations with an arrivederci to London. At the inauguration (May 17) the Morbelli family will be represented by Alessandro and Marco, sons of Roberto, and the Prof. Damaso Caprioglio will represent Amis dla Curma.

Thomas Almeroth-Williams commented: "It is clear to see why Angelo Morbelli found such inspiration at the Villa Maria in Colma. The hills of Monferrato provide some of the most beautiful landscapes in Italy. For an artist so interested in the power of light and color, this region was a great source of inspiration. The National Gallery's exhibition of Divisionist paintings in London will help to raise awareness of these great Piedmontese painters, including Angelo Morbelli and Giuseppe Pellizza da Volpedo."

Alla Colma frazione di Rosignano, in Valle Ghenza, a "Villa Maria", hanno restaurato il grande studio del famoso pittore divisionista Angelo Morbelli, tornato come cento anni fa grazie alle foto d'epoca di Francesco Negri e al duro lavoro degli "Amis dla Curma" presieduti da Annita Rosso.

Un tuffo nella storia dell'arte propiziato dal fatto che alla prestigiosa National Gallery di Londra, dal 18 giugno al 7 settembre si terra' la mostra "Divisionisti. Radical Light: Italy's Divisionist Painters 1891-1910" nella quale saranno esposte ben otto importanti opere dell'artista monferrino. E' nato cosi', grazie a Thomas Almeroth-Williams, capo ufficio stampa della National Gallery un educational tour che ha portato alla Colma un gruppo di giornalisti ed esperti inglesi tra cui, oltre a Alneroth, Antony Spawforth (inviato del "The Times newspaper"), Laura Gascoigne, Helen Sumpter e Christopher Riopelle e Simonetta Fraquelli.

Un onore essere per dirla coi colleghi inglesi "the first", i primi "to see Angelo's studio restored...", a vedere lo studio appena restaurato. Alla Colma gli ospiti (che giungevano da Volpedo dove avevano visitato lo studio del pittore Pellizza) sono stati accolti dal padrone di casa Roberto Morbelli (bisnipote del pittore).

Emozionante, appunto, la visita allo studio coi quaderni, i colori, la sdraio ("usata" in molti quadri), il cavalletto, le lastre del pittore e la grande finestra che si affaccia sulla valle e le colline quelle colline che fanno da sfondo a tanti quadri.

Poi trasferimento al Museo Civico di Casale la cui pinacoteca ospita un cospicuo fondo Morbelli, in deposito dalla famiglia di Roberto. Infine cena ufficiale al castello di Uviglie (da cui si vede la Colma...) con ulteriore ammirazione per il paesaggio e ... le medievali cantine.

Saluti finali con arrivederci a Londra, all'inaugurazione (il 17) la famiglia Morbelli sara' rappresentata da Alessandro e Marco, figli di Roberto e gli Amis dla Curma dal prof. Damaso Caprioglio.

Questo il commento di Thomas Almeroth-Williams: "E' chiaro che vedere Angelo Morbelli trarre ispirazione a Villa Maria alla Colma. Le colline del Monferrato provvedere paesaggi tra i piu' meravigliosi in Italia, Per un artista cosi' interesato al potere della luce e ai colori questa regione e' stata una grande fonte di ispirazione. L'esibizione dei quadri divisionisti alla National Gallery a Londra aiuteranno crescere la conoscenza di questi grandi pittori piemontesi, fra cui Angelo Morbelli e Giuseppe Pellizza da Volpedo."

PRODI VISITS CASALE

The first Sunday he was ex-prime minister, Romano Prodi was in the Monferrato. At 7 p.m. he arrived in the splendid Casale synagogue with his wife Flavia Franzoni and other family members, to attend one of the 70 events of the OyOyOy festival of Jewish culture: Gad Lerner's interview with Luciano Segre, the economics expert who has collaborated with Prodi.

Segre, born in Casale (where his family ran a textiles shop on Via Roma), recounted how his Jewish family fled the round-ups during World War II, taking refuge in with the parish priest of Moransengo, a small village in the Valle Cerrina, between Cocconato and Cavagnolo, in the Dioces of Casale. In the church house Riccardo Segre and his wife Angela, his sister Elvire and the young Luciano took refuge (to trick the Germans he integrated himself as an altar boy completely confirmed by bishop Mons. Angrisani who was aware of the dangerous situation).

A proposal now has been floated to recognize Don Michelone as a "Giusto d'Israele."

Prodi also visited, accompanied by Elio Carmi, the museum of the lights and the museum of silver, adjacent to the synagogue. OyOyOy, which also has a rich complement of shows and concerts, ends May 25.

La prima domenica da ex presidente del Consiglio per Romano Prodi e' stata monferrina: alle 19 e' arrivato nella splendida sinagoga di Sinagoga, a Casale, con la moglie Flavia Franzoni e altri famigliari, per assistere a uno dei settanta appuntamenti del festival di cultura ebraica OyOyOy: l'intervista di Gad Lerner a Luciano Segre, esperto di economia che aveva collaborato con lo stesso Prodi.

Segre, ebreo nato a Casale (in via Roma dove i Segre gestivano un negozio di tessuti), ha raccontato come la sua famiglia sia sfuggita ai rastrellamenti durante la seconda guerra mondiale trovando rifugio dal parroco di Moransengo, un piccolo comune della Valle Cerrina, fra Cocconato e Cavagnolo, diocesi di Casale. Angrisani che era al corrente della pericolosa situazione).

Per don Michelone ora viene proposto il riconoscimento come 'Giusto d'Israele'.

Prodi ha anche visitato, accompagnato da Elio Carmi, il Museo dei lumi e il Museo degli argenti annessi alal Sinagoga. OyOyOY, che ha anche in ricco corredo di mostre e concerti si chiudera' il 25 maggio.

SOARING ABOVE THE MONFERRATO

At 5:45 p.m. Saturda, the Piper Pa28 Arrow of the Palla Aero Club set its wheels dowj in the field of Cappa of Casale from which it had taken off at 9:22 a.m. (7:22 "zulu"). The aircraft (piloted by Matteo Conti and Alessandro Maggione with journalist Luigi Angelino as a passenger) was taking part in the eighth aviation meeting of the spring at Lake Traimento with an 11:45 landing at the Eleuteri airfield of Castiglion del Lago Scopo, showing the colors of the Aero Club. Palli di Casale is an important aviation meeting for recreation and sport (and in effect there are three days of aircraft traffic and rides. Meeting also has sixty booths with equipment for flying. Upon landing, the Casalese delegation was greeted by the event president Alessio Alberati, press agent Duilio Silenzi and by councillor Massimo Sordi and there was an exchange of gifts. The organizers received books about Casale and especially appreciated was the aviation one by Idro Grignolio. The Casalese plane is by now almost historic as it was carried in flight by supplemental takns from the USA and Europe and 10 years ago had participated in the "remake" of the historic 1918 flight to Vienna by the "La Serenissima" squadron commanded by Casalese Capt. natale Palli, who transported poet Gabriele d'Annunzio on his Sva plane.

Alle 17.54 di sabato il Piper Pa28 Arrow dell'Aero Club Palli posava le ruote sul campo Cappa di Casale da cui era decollato alle 9,22 (7.22 "zulu"). Il velivolo (piloti Matteo Conti e Alessandro Maggione passeggero il giornalista Luigi Angelino) aveva partecipato all'ottavo Meeting aviatorio di primavera al Lago Trasimeno con atterraggio alle 11,45 all'aviosuperfice "Eleuteri" di Castiglion del Lago Scopo era mostrare i colori dell'Aero Club. Palli di Casale e' un importante raduno di aviazione da diporto e sportiva (e in effetti in tre giorni registrera' tra traffico e passaggio 1400 velivoli). Meeting, con contorno di sessanta stand di attrezzature per il volo e partecipazioni ufficiali. All'atterraggio la delegazione casalese e' stata subito ricevuta dal presidente della manifestazione Alessio Alberati, dall'addetto stampa Duilio Silenzi e dal consigliere Massimo Sordi. Scambio di doni. Gli organizzatori ricevono libri su Casale, apprezzato quello aviatorio di Idro Grignolio. L'aereo casalese e' ormai un pezzo quasi storico era stato portato in volo con serbatoi supplementari dall'Usa in Europa e dieci anni fa aveva partecipato al "remake" dello storico volo su Vienna del 1918 della Squadriglia "La Serenissima" comandata dal capitano casalese Natale Palli che trasportava sul suo aereo Sva il poeta Gabriele d'Annunzio.

EYES ON PIEMONTE -- NEW YORK PHOTO EXHIBITS

AstiTurismo, the Regione Piemonte and a number of other groups have collabored to bring "Eyes on Piemonte," two Piemontese photography exhibitions, to New York in May. The first is Focus on Monferrato, which takes place May 1-23 at Barbetta Restaurant, 321 W. 46th St. The second, "Magnum Sees Piemonte," May 2-23 at the New York-Italian Academy for advanced study in America at Columbia University. Here are descriptions of the exhibits:

Focus on Monferrato
Focus on Monferrato was launched in 2004, based on an idea proposed by Regione Piemonte and the Toscana Photographic Workshop. The project aims to find an intelligent, new and culturally satisfying way of promoting the area of Monferrato. Having initially involved photography students from schools all over the world, the project was then broadened to include young professional photographers. All the participants attend a 10-day photography workshop under the guidance of renowned photographers who, as well as being instructors, act as leaders and play a role in the project itself.

In 2007 the project was transformed into a Masterclass, a launch pad for young photographers making their debut in the professional world of photography. The project sets ambitious goals that are not easily accomplished: namely, it asks "foreigners" to look at the area with fresh eyes, and to show us what a person visiting Monferrato for the first time finds most striking.

More than actual projects, the photos taken by participants should be seen as notebooks whose contents will help to remind them of their impressions during this trip. The students, who are hosted by Regione Piemonte, are given a free rein to work on a project involving Monferrato. The choice of subject is left to the free interpretation of individual participants.

Over the years, participants have worked on a wide variety of topics: ranging from "classic" choices like the grape harvest, work, and the family, to more original ideas concerning the changes that have affected the area in recent years, including immigration, new housing developments, new fashions and the blend between old and new Monferrato.

What is important is the impression made by Monferrato on these young photographers, the ideas they will ta ke back to their own countries, and the stories they will tell. It is almost inevitable that a comparison be drawn between the 19th-century travellers who set out on a Grand Tour of Italy equipped with pen and paper, and these 21st-century travellers equipped with digital cameras. The means at their disposal have changed, but not their sense of curiosity.

"Focus on Monferrato" will also be on display at Festa Italiana in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, July 17-20, 2008.

"Magnum sees Piemonte"
World-famous photographers and a region, Piemonte, that is constantly reinventing itself. It's a combination that has given rise to the project entitled "Magnum sees Piemonte", launched by the Regione in collaboration with Magnum Photos.

This prestigious photo agency, founded by Robert Capa and Cartier Bresson, has made some of its best photographers available; and Piemonte has contributed its landscape, its heritage and its people.

For months the photographers involved in the project have portrayed Piemonte, using a theme that reflects their individual artistic interests and personal preferences: Frontiers for Jean Gaumy, Quality of Life for Bruno Barbey, Taste and Talent for Harry Gruyaert, the Manufacturing system for Luc Delahaye, Landscape for Stuart Franklin, Building Sites for Marc Power, Cultural heritage for Peter Marlow, Technology for Patrick Zachmann, Young Persons for Alex Majoli, Institutions for Ferdinando Scianna, and an open topic for Joseph Koudelka. The end result is a striking kaleidoscope of images, faces, views, extraordinary sights hidden by the chaos of city life, crafts and snatches of life brought together to form a catalogue and a traveling exhibition.

After going on show at European exhibition centres in Frankfurt, Alicante, London, Berlin and Annecy, the exhibition has finally reached New York, where its powerfully evocative images offer a testimony of the different faces of Piemonte and the ongoing transformations of a region that is as eager for change as it is protective of its traditions.

RINA ROLLA IMARISIO

Although we didn't know her, we received this information about the passing of Rina Rolla Imarisio on April 7 at age 98. Bornin in Casorzo, Rina moved to the U.S. with her husband Louis Imarisio, also clearly a monferrino with a cognome like that, in 1933. We send our condolences to Rina's family and friends. Like many monferrine women, Rina was apparently an expert sarta, and she was also a member of the Pietro Micca Club, which, of course, bears the name of the hero of the Turin siege of 1706. Here is the obituary we found online:

Rina Rolla Imarisio, 98, formerly of Hamden, Connecticut, wife of the late Louis Imarisio, died Monday at St. Joseph's Manor, Trumbull.

Born in Casorzo Monferrato, Italy, to the late Giacomo and Cosmina Fasone Rolla, she came to the United States as a bride in 1933. She was a talented dressmaker and forelady with the David Crystal Dress Company in New Haven and a member of the ILGWU. She belonged to the New Haven Garden Club and the Pietro Micca Club, and was a parishioner of Blessed Sacrament Church in Hamden. When not at work she devoted her extraordinary energy to her ever-sprouting gardens and to creating Piedmontese dinners to delight family and friends.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Lillian and Dr. Joseph Pesce of Fairfield; her granddaughters and their husbands, Linda and Arthur Laske of Easton, Drs. Katherine Pesce and Kenneth Kingsly of Fairfield, and Drs. Suzanne Pesce and Stephen Kovach of Wynnwood, Pa.; her great-grandchildren, John, Joseph, Nathaniel and Anna Laske, Noah and Julia Kingsly, and Jack and Elena Kovach; her sisters, Teresa Rolla and Vivina Cavana of Italy; and several nieces and nephews. Her sisters, Maria DeGiovanni and Irma Percivale, and brother, Mario Rolla, predeceased her.

CRUISING WITH IL MONFERRATO

Andrea Tavella, commercial director of the Italian office of Costa cruises and Maurizio Musso, in charge of the Costa in Piemonte, "disembarked" in Casale as a means of calling attention to the work done by Stat Viaggi travel agency and Editrice Monferrato, which publishes the twice-weekly Il Monferrato newspaper in the city.

The annual cruises for the readers of the paper are events that draw anywhere from 300 to 400 people. The next one, on the ship "Costa Mediterranea," will be the seventh.

The two welcome guests participated first in a meeting at the Stat headquarters in the city's industrial zone, along with Stat President Paolo Pia and Emanuele Giachino, administrative delegate of Editrice Monferrato. Then they all visited the Il Monferrato newsroom (pictured above) in Viale Cavalli d'Olivola, where the two managers offered compliments on the editorial work done (by Luigi Angelino), both on the cruise, with short articles and photos sent from the ship and published in the newspaper and on its Web site and for the launch of the upcoming initiatives: "In your rapport with the population, you are one of the strong points of the Costa."

Also underlined in a positive manner was the fact that on every cruise, the readers of Il Monferrato find a surprise dedicated to them (such as the Papal salute and the visit to the Quirinal Palace in Rome). Also examined, through the lens of tourism promotion for the zone (on which the two guests received a lot of materials), was the possiblity that Il Monferrato become an excursion point for passengers from Costa ships calling at Savona or (when it happens) at Genoa.

The 2008 Il Monferrato-Stat cruise, "Facing North," with tours of the grand capitals, leaves Sunday, Sept. 14 (by plane or coach) to Copenhagen, to embark on the "Costa Mediterranea" that will then reach the ports of Dover (which means London and other lovely excursions, Le Havre (Paris; remember, too, that many emigrants from the Monferrato departed for America from the port at Le Havre), Vigo (Santiago), Lisbon, Cadiz, Malaga, Savona (disembarking Wednesday, Sept. 24).

Poi hanno compiuto una visita alla redazione de "il Monferrato" (nella foto) in viale Cavalli d'Olivola dove i due manager si sono, tra l'altro, complimentati per il lavoro redazionale svolto (da Luigi Angelino) sia in crociera con pezzi e foto spediti dalla nave che sul giornale e sul sito per il lancio delle prossime iniziative: "In rapporto alla popolazione siete uno dei punti di forza della Costa".

Sottolineato pure in maniera positiva il fatto che in ogni crociera i lettori de "Il Monferrato" trovino una sorpresa a loro dedicata (come il saluto del Pontefice e la visita al Quirinale a Roma.). E' stato anche affrontata, in un ottica di promozione turistica della zona (su cui i due ospiti hanno ricevuto molto materiale), la possibilita' che il Monferrato diventi meta di escursioni per i passeggeri delle navi Costa che attraccano a Savona o (quando succedera') a Genova.

La crociera 2008 Il Monferrato-Stat "Alla volta del Nord", con tour delle grandi capitali parte domenica 14 settembre alla volta (aereo o pullman) di Copenaghen per imbarcarsi sulla "Costa Mediterranea" che poi tocchera' i porti di Dover (che vuol dire Londra e altre belle escursioni), Le Havre (Parigi), Vigo (Santiago), Lisbona, Cadice, Malaga, Savona (sbarco mercoledi' 24).

EXPLORING THE CAVES OF THE MONFERRATO

Guided by Luigi Bavagnoli, president of the Teses spelunking association (www.teses.net) and councilor of the National Federation of Artificial Caves (www.archeologiadelsottosuolo.it), a group of spelunkers arrived in force Saturday at Colma di Rosignano.

It was a full-immersion in the capital of the Monferrato's subterranean environments organized by Anita Rosso, president of the "Amis dla Curma," and it served as a way to introduce the association's Internet site (along with Webmaster Alfredo Frixa), as well as some very interesting geology. The group, comprising also Gianluca Padovan, author of numerous spelunking and archelogical texts (published also in the notebooks series of British archeology B.A.R. of Oxford), visited the Caproglio marlstone quarry (under the castle) and were received by the owner Ernani Caprioglio. Next were the Angelino "tufo" undergound quarries at the Bricco, notable for their immensity; they are real cathedrals carved into the "tufo" (the group was received on behalf of the owner by Luigi and Franco Angelino and Bruno Monti), the Campagnola undergound quarries (the owner was represented by Stefano Campagnola) and, finally, the Valeggia undergound quarries.

Among those present were also Giuseppe Arditi, president of the Eco Museo Pietra da Cantoni, which is based in Cella Monte, the mayor of Treville Pietro Coppo and assessor Fabrizio Frigeri.

Bavagnoli said: "The caves at Colma are truly notable and I am certain that a deeper study, on both the geological and historical / anthropological aspects, can merit ample resonance at a national level. Right after the visit we thought of inserting these extrative works in the Cadastre Nazionale della Cavita' Artificiale, which I maintain along with Gianluca Padovan for the F.N.C.A. A large photographic exhibit is also being studied."

Guidati da Luigi Bavagnoli, presidente della Associazione speleo-archeologica Teses (www.teses.net) e consigliere della Federazione Nazionale Cavita' Artificiali (www.archeologiadelsottosuolo.it), un gruppo di speleologi e' sbarcato in forze sabato alla Colma di Rosignano.

Un full immersion in quella che e' un poco la capitale degli ambienti sotterranei monferrini organizzata da Anita Rosso presidente degli "Amis dla Curma" che ha il merito di aver introdotto sul sito internet dell'associazione (complice il web master Alfredo Frixa) una parte geologica molto interessante. Il gruppo, composto anche da Gianluca Padovan, autore di numerosi testi di carattere speleo-archeologico (pubblicati anche sui quaderni di archeologia britannica B.A.R. di Oxford), ha visitato le cave Caproglio (sotto il castello) di marna, ricevuto dal proprietario Ernani Caprioglio poi le cave Angelino di pietre da cantoni al Bricco impressionanti per la loro vastita', vere e proprie cattedrali scavate nel tufo (ricevuti per la proprieta' da Luigi e Franco Angelino e da Bruno Monti), le cave Campagnola (la proprieta' era rappresentata da Stefano Campagnola) e infine le cave Valeggia.

Tra i presenti anche Giuseppe Arditi presidente dell'Eco Museo Pietra da cantoni che ha sede a Cella Monte (con cui e' avviato un intelligente discorso di valorizzazione), il sindaco di Treville Piero Coppo con l'assessore Fabrizio Frigeri.

Dichiara Bavagnoli: "Le cave della Colma sono veramente notevoli e sono certo che uno studio approfondito, sia sotto l'aspetto geologico che storico- antropologico ed archeologico possa meritare ampia risonanza a livello nazionale e non. Subito dopo la visita abbiamo pensato di inserire queste opere estrattive nel Cadastre Nazionale delle Cavita' Artificiali che gestisco insieme a Gianluca Padovan per conto dell'F.N.C.A." E' allo studio una grande mostra fotografica.

PIEMONTESE PHOTO EXHIBIT IN VIRGINIA

Fredericksburg, VA -- On Monday, March 10, the photo exhibition "La Maschera della Donna, Feminine Masks in the Traditional Carnival of Piedmont, Italy" opens.

Edited by Michele F. Fontefrancesco (University of Mary Washington), this exhibition collects photos, taken by Piercarlo Grimaldi (Universita' degli Studi di Scienze Gastronomiche) and Davide Porporato (Universita' del Piemonte Orientale), of diverse women's masks today used in nine feasts of Piedmont, a region whose folkloric importance was made known with works and expositions of national and internationally relevance.

The exhibit, sponsored by Simpson Program in Medieval Studies, Modern Foreing Language Department, UMW: Italian Studies, UMW Women's History Month, Universita' Piemonte Orientale: Facolta' Lettere e Filosofia, gives its visitors the opportunity to meet part of the Italian culture that generally is not known.

Focusing on the traditional carnivals, as photographers Piercarlo Grimaldi and Davide Porporato, note, "this appointment highlights a peculiarity that we consider really important: the presence of women's masks. During carnival, the women could not participate directly in the feast. Their only task was to prepare the costumes and the foods required for the celebration. They could only watch the feast and stay aside." However, a carnival is the representation of the entire village society and, from the perspective of gender studies, these carnivals allow to analyze so as to understand the role played by woman in the traditional community.

A REPORT FROM LU MONFERRATO

During these months I have continued to collaborate with the newspaper of my village, al Pais d'Lu. For it I wrote monthly a couple of columns that were published as the survey "Diario americano." That was my personal way to share something of my experiences with my people, my village. This is an antecedent fact required to understand what it's happened this morning.

Sunday it's a really peculiar day. It's the day when all the community of the village gathers. By the theory, the main reason of this phenomenon should be the mass but in reality it's something that goes beyond the religion and finds its roots in the necessity that everyone of us feels of meeting the others not for the aulic need to share his own experiences which you can have read in tons of anthropological books concerning the "Italian society", but only to be seen, to greet and be greeted by them.

I'm not really a great believer and all the justifications are good for me to avoid the church on Sunday. However I cannot escape from its parvis. OK, in a dictionary the parvis is described as a "courtyard or portico in front of a building (especially a cathedral)", but the parvis about I refer, it's not made by bricks and rocks: it's the most crucial moment of a typical Sunday in the life of a hamlet. In fact, at the end of the rite, the crowd that was before canned in the church, spurts out from the building to the street and then, immediately, a multitude of small groups of chatting people are created. It's in that moment that you can feel on your skin what means to be part of the village, to be part of something that it's more than you: a net of stories, tales, wishes and, of course, lies.

If you want just to pass through this muddle, only saying "Sorry" and "Please ...", you will risk experiencing the most withering delusion of your life. If you have decided or you have had to pass thru, you must play your role in the comedy that is the life in a small community: you have to shake the hands of dozen people, whose name is, probably, completely unknown to you, to show them great interest about their existences, about their small or great joys and sorrows. You must do it; you must do it if you want to LIVE in the village and not only to RESIDE there. Sometimes it's frustrating, of course. Sometimes you would prefer to go forward among them and, with bent head, continue to think about your existence, your joy and your sorrow: it's impossible because, in a small community where in everywhere you must perform your part, if you have trampled down the most important stage that there is between all the public places public, it means that YOU MUST HAVE DECIDED TO PLAY YOUR ROLE and it's a very worrying fact, a felony, to not do it.

This morning I was coming back at home from the main square and I arrived at the parvis. As generally it happens, there were the knots I've described you before. Not an oceanic crowd, of course, but in front of me there were my people, those men and women I have loved, hated, exalted and blamed. When I have arrived near them, I captured involuntary their attention. Suddenly, I found myself in the middle of circle of fellows who asked me, in a cacophonous chorus, how I was, how was the America, when was I been back, when will I come back from that country, and before to say me goodbye they thanked sincerely for the few words I had wrote on our newspaper that make them see and meet a part of the world they have always dreamed. It was so strange and so natural in the same time!

Only one week after my arrival, this morning, I can say I have arrived in Lu, again.

Cinema Piemonte: Discover the Fine Films of the First Film Capital of Italy-Turin.

Few know that Turin is the historic home of the Italian film industry and that the National Film Museum lies inside the Mole Antonelliana, the symbol of the city of Turin.

The Associazione Piemontesi of Northern California will screen four celebrated films from Turin over three days at the beautiful Cowell Theater at Fort Mason Center in San Francisco.

Gargale will introduce the National Film Museum, one of the most popular museums in Turin and one of the most important film museums in the world. The sixth cruise "Il Monferrato-Stat" brought 300 Monferrini from Sunday, Nov. 11 to Sunday, Nov. 18, along Costa Serena touring the Mediterranean.

The stops were: Bari, where the center was ridiscovered, Olimpia where the Olympics were born, Efeso at the house of Maria and an enormous archeological site (and much more is left to discover). Therefore Istanbul-Costantinopol, at first place in our memories the Cisterns, with the striking passageways along the water, crossing the flying bridge, then the imperial palace, a luxurious location for a lunch as much at the levels of the mosques, the colors of the great bazar (where haggling is mandatory).

Lastly, Venice and the end of the lagoon tour, at 3:15 on Sunday, November 18, the chief rabbi Richetti welcomed the 300 actually with a song composed in Casale in the 1600s at the largest Synagogue of Venice, the Spanish one, on fire with lights and red drapery, and then lifted is the civic tower of Casale, given by the Comune (represented by the vice mayor Crisafulli) in the atmosphere of brotherhood between the two Israeli communities. A pact of friendship re-launched with importance by the Venetian newspapers.

La sesta crociera "Il Monferrato-Stat" ha portato trecento monferrini da domenica 11 a domenica 18 novembre sulla Costa Serena in giro per il Mediterraneo.

Le tappe: Bari, dove si e' riscoperto il centro, Olimpia dove sono nate le Olimpiadi, Efeso alla casa di Maria e al sito archeologico enorme (e molto resta da scoprire). Quindi Istanbul-Costantinopoli, al primo posto nel ricordo (per noi) le Cisterne, coi suggestivi passaggi sull'acqua, attraverso passerelle, poi il palazzo dell'imperatore, una location di lusso per un pranzo altrettanto di livello le moschee, i colori del gran bazar (contrattare e' un obbligo). Infine Venezia e al termine del tour lagunare, alle 15,15 di domenica 18), il rabbino capo Richetti che accoglie i trecento proprio con un canto composto a Casale nel '600 alla piu' grande Sinagoga di Venezia, quella spagnola, fiammeggiante di luci e tendaggi rossi, e poi alza la torre civica di Casale dono del Comune (rappresentato dal vice sindaco Crisafulli) nell'ambito di un gemellaggio tra le due comunita' israelitiche. Un patto di amicizia rilanciato con rilievo dai quotidiani veneziani.

MONFERRINI IN AMERICA AT PIEMONTESI NEL MONDO CONFERENCE

Alessandria, Italy -- Even if Italian-Americans aren't rare in Milwaukee, ones with roots in the Piemonte region of northwest Italy are fairly hard to come by. Other than some who arrived here via other cities -- like me -- there is only a group of the descendants of emigrants from the Canavese area near Turin that arrived a century ago to work in the Bay View rolling mill and a few modern migrants living here for work reasons.

So, when people outside Milwaukee see that I've got a Web site about the region and do a lot of work to promote the Piemontese culture, they are perhaps rightfully surprised. Because, here, I'm part of a very small club.

Over the weekend, at the Third International Conference of the Piemontesi in the World, held in Alessandria, Italy, I met like-minded people from pretty much everywhere. There were Piemontesi from South Africa, China, Canada, Australia, Argentina, Brazil, England, France, Russia and seemingly everywhere in between; 19 countries in all. Besides me, representing the U.S. were folks from New York, San Francisco and San Diego.

This tower of Babel was united in most cases by the Italian language -- which was the language of the conference -- but in almost every case by the Piemontese language, in all its glorious dialects, from the "official" Turin-based tongue, to the dialects from provinces like Alessandria, Asti and Novara.

At the closing dinner on Saturday, I brought along three friends from the group Ariondassa, which has played twice in Milwaukee -- at Festa Italiana 2005 and 2006 -- and the event was transformed from a nice dinner to a rousing sing-along and dance in the style of the region's traditional "piola" or taverns, where music always was served alongside a bottle of Barbera.

For two short days we were all home together, in the land of our ancestors and our contemporary cousins, and we showed the Piemontesi in Piemonte that although we've moved away, we haven't forgotten our history.

BAVA WINES AT THE NEW YORK MARATHON

For the second time, the champions, both italian and international, at the NY Marathon drank wine from the Monferrato at the gala organized by "Turin Marathon" on November 4 on the occasion of the NY Marathon. The presentation luncheon took place at the historic San Donemico restaurant on Central Park, the owner of which, Tony May, is noted also in Piemonte for the many displays he has produced and recognitions he has received.

The chef was the young and capable Odette Fada, well known among New York food enthusiasts. Authorities from the cities New York and Torino took part in this joint presentation, including Luigi Chiabrera from Italy. The occasion was a meeting between the press, the Italian champions from several years, and many well-known faces ranging from Gianni Morandi to DJ Linus. The Piemontese organization took the opportunity to present not just the Torinese competition, but also the region by way of its products, in particular its wine.

The wines were a Gavi di Gavi, a Chardonnay Thou Bianc from the Bava vineyard in Coconato, a Stradivario la Barbera Asti Superiore, which already has a presence in the New York restaurant scene, along with a fragrant Moscato Asti Bass Tuba, which is perhaps the most capable of sustaining the runners over the 42 km of the most famous race course in the world, thanks to its rich, natural sugars.

Per la seconda volta i campioni italiani ed internazionali alla NY Marathon bevono vini monferrini al Gala organizzato dalla "Turin Marathon" il 4 novembre in occasione della NY Marathon a New York. Il "luncheon" di presentazione avverra' allo storico ristorante San Domenico su Central Park il cui patron Tony May e' molto noto anche in Piemonte per le tante manifestazioni e riconoscimenti ricevuti.

La chef e' la giovane e brava Odette Fada ben nota ai cultori della cucina italiana a New York. Questa presentazione di gemellaggio alla quale partecipano autorita' della citta' di New York e Torino, oltre ai presidenti delle due istituzioni, per l'Italia Luigi Chiabrera, e' l'occasione di incontro per la stampa con i campioni italiani delle edizioni precedenti e le tante facce note italiane assidui corridori alla NY Marathon, da Gianni Morandi al DJ Linus. L'organizzazione piemontese non sottovaluta l'occasione per presentare alla stampa statunitense non solo la gara torinese, ma anche il territorio della regione con i prodotti che ne sono un veicolo trainante ed il vino uno dei principali.

BENVENUTO A PIAZZALE SILVIO PIA!

On Saturday, at 5:30 p.m., the bus station at Corso Indipendenza officially became Piazzale Silvio Pia named for the man called "the first to manage urban public transportation". Unveiling the plaque at a ceremony attended by many was Alessandro Pia, the youngest son of Silvio's son Paolo.

In his welcoming address, the mayor Paolo Mascarino remembered that in every case it is a perfect union between name and function. The Pia family for three generations has been associated with buses. First with Evasio Pia who in 1919 founded the first society of Casalese bus transports. Activities that were then followed by Silvio Pia and that continue successfully today with Paolo Pia. A family that above all is identified with the initials STAT. The STAT group includes STAT Tourism, STAT Trips, Autoticino, GoldTravel, Geotravel, Volpi and Callero, with branches in Genova and Lomellina.

In this case Silvio Pia was, like his father and son, a pioneer in local public transportation, the first to accomplish at the end of the 1930s a regular urban connection in Casale (from San Germano to Popolo), the first to guess that the Stat business should be expanded along the lines of long distances, so much so that he inaugurated in the 1960s connections that exist still today between Casale and the Adriatic Coast.

To respond was an emotional Paolo Pia who remembered the work of his mother Sandra, who recently passed away, and extended his thanks to employees and relatives.

Therefore the blessing of Mons. Gennaro "not only to the piazza but also to the buses that visit it."

Sabato alle ore 17,30 l'autostazione di Corso Indipendenza e' diventata ufficialmente Piazzale Silvio Pia "1 primo gestore trasporto pubblico urbano". A scoprire la targa di intitolazione Alessandro Pia, giovanissimo figlio di Paolo, a sua volta figlio di Silvio. Una cerimonia molto partecipata.

Nel suo indirizzo di saluto il sindaco Paolo Mascarino ha ricordato che tratta in ogni caso di un connubio perfetto tra nome e funzione. La famiglia Pia da tre generazioni e' associata agli autobus. Prima con Evasio Pia che nel 1919 ha fondato la prima societa' di autotrasporti casalese. Attivita' proseguita con Silvio Pia e che continua ancora oggi con successo con Paolo Pia. Una famiglia che si identifica soprattutto con la sigla STAT. Ma il gruppo comprende in tutto sette marchi: Stat Turismo, Stat Viaggi, Autoticino, GoldTravel, Geotravel, Volpi e Callero, con ramificazioni a Genova e in Lomellina.

In quest'ottica Silvio Pia e' stato, come suo padre e suo figlio, un pioniere del trasporto pubblico locale, il primo a realizzare alla fine degli anni 30 una linea regolare di collegamento urbano a Casale (da San Germano a Popolo), il primo a intuire che il business della Stat fosse da espandere sulle linee a lunga percorrenza, tanto da inaugurare negli anni sessanta collegamenti che ancora oggi esistono tra Casale e la Riviera Adriatica.

Nel rispondere un emozionato Paolo Pia ha ricordato il lavoro della mamma Sandra recentemente scomparsa ed esteso il suo grazie ai dipendenti e ai familiari. Quindi la benedizione del vicario vescovile mons. Gennaro "non solo alla piazza ma anche ai pullman che la frequentano..."

A MEETING WITH THE MAYOR

Every trip to Italy is a little different, and we come back a little different. I returned in October from my 12th trip to Montiglio Monferrato. To me, it's one of the most beautiful places in Italy . However, it's hard to be impartial. Montiglio is our family name.

The surroundings were as beautiful, and the people were as kind and friendly, as always. It was great to visit with Renato, Rosanna and Carolina , who have provided years of friendship and hospitality.

The grape harvest came early this year, and Renato said that this year's Barbera will be excellent.

I had the opportunity to meet Mayor Dimitri Tasso, whom we accompanied to Turin to promote the annual truffle festival on TV. Despite his many responsibilities, he kindly invited me to visit his office the following day for conversation and photos.

I would recommend Montiglio Monferrato to any traveler seeking tranquility and a glimpse of rural Italian life. There are plenty of narrow streets and a nice panorama from the piazza outside the 13th century castle. There's the 12th century Church of San Lorenzo, the pride of the town. Il Pozzo, a bar/restaurant located in Piazza Regina Margherita, offers a pleasant atmosphere. For nature lovers, there's a network of hiking trails to nearby hills.

Ogni viaggio in Italia e un po' diverso, e ritorniamo a casa un po' cambiati. Sono ritornato in ottobre dal mio 12mo viaggio a Montiglio Monferrato. Secondo me, e' uno dei paesi piu belli in tutt'Italia. Pero, e' difficile ad essere imparziale. Montiglio e' il nostro cognome.

I ditorni erano tranquili e la gente era gentile ed amichevole come sempre. Era un gran piacere a trovare i miei amici, Renato, Rosanna e Carolina, chi mi hanno proviso molti anni di amicizia ed ospitalita'.

La vendemmia e' venuta in anticipo quest' anno. Renato ha detto che la Barbera sara eccelente.

Ho avuto il gran piacere di incontrare il Sindaco Dimitri Tasso, chi abbiamo accompagnato a Turino per fare per pubblicitare l'annuale Festa del Tartufo. Nonostante le sue risponsibilite numerose, mi ha invitato a troverlo in ufficio la mattina seguente per una conversazione piacevole e delle foto.

Vorrei raccomendare Montiglio Monferrato ad ogni viaggiatore chi vuole tranquilita' ed una occhiata della vita italiana della campagna. Ci sono molti vicoli stretti e una panorama bella dalla piazza del castello del 13mo secolo. C'e' la Chiesa San Lorenzo, del 12mo secolo, l'orgoglio del paese. Il Pozzo, un bar/ristorante nella Piazza Regina Margherita, offre un ambiente piacevole. Per i passionati di natura, c'e una rete di sentieri che si collegano alle colline vicine.

CONCERT CELEBRATES 900 YEARS OF THE CASALE DUOMO

On Saturday, Oct. 6, at 6 p.m. in the Duomo at Casale, the first nationwide performance of "The Missa Sancti Evasii," composed by Giulio Castagnoli, will be performed by the Montis Regalis Academy Orchestra and the Rugero Machini Chorus, directed by Claudio Castagnoli, in collaboration with the Opera di Ragazzidi Casali Chorus.

The Bishop Mons. Germano Zaccheo describes the performance as a "musical event of great emotional and cultural inpact, a solemn celebration in the cathedral accompanied by orchestra, chorus, solists, and assemblies, in perfect symphony with the riformed liturgy of the Vatican Council II. This undertaking is of great importance because it constitutes a precious testimony that music and contemporany art have full citizenship in the secular and liturgical tradition of the Church."

Giulio Castagnoli, who has made Casale his adopted home, is professor of composition at the Conservatorio di Torino. He has maintained a long collaboration with Luciano Berio. He has composed on comission of principal concert institutions and radio networks in Europe, the Americas, Asia, and Austrailia.

He is actually composing the third part of the collective work "HJ" on the libretto of the Danish composer Niels Windfeld Lund together with composers from Norway, America, and China.

Il vescovo mons. Germano Zaccheo ricorda che si tratta di un "evento musicale di grande impatto emotivo e culturale: una celebrazione solenne in Cattedrale accompagnata da orchestra, coro, solisti e assemblea, in perfetta sintonia con la liturgia riformata dal Concilio Vaticano II. Ritengo questo avvenimento di grande importanza, perche' costituisce una preziosa testimonianza che la musica e l'arte contemporanea hanno piena cittadinanza nella secolare tradizione liturgica delle Chiesa."

Giulio Castagnoli, casalese d'adozione, e' professore di composizione al Conservatorio di Torino. Ha a lungo collaborato con Luciano Berio.

Ha composto su commissione delle principali istituzioni concertistiche ed enti radiofonici europei, americani, asiatici e australiani.

Attualmente sta componendo il terzo atto dell'opera collettiva "HJ" su libretto del danese Niels Windfeld Lund insieme a un compositore norvegese, un americano, e un cinese.

SYNAGOGUE CONCERT FEATURES ANTIQUE INSTRUMENTS

A public and critical succeess Sunday, Sept. 23 at the Silver Synagogue in Casale Monferrato's Jewish community where there was a concert on instruments of the era by the Orchestra Classica Atalanta Fugiens -- directed by Maestro Vanni Moretto -- dedicated to the works of 18th century composer Antonio Brioschi. Some of the works were written in Casale and in fact for the Synagogue. Also performed were works by two precursors of classicism, Fortunato Chelleri and Giovanni Battista Sammartini. All of them composed the first experiments in writing classical symphonies at the end of the 1720s, offering an important contribution to the genesis and development of the symphonic genre and guiding the European classicism that would later have protagonists of the caliber of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven.

The concert was preceded by a conference on the subject, "Antonio Brioschi and the pioneers of Classicism," held by Vanni Moretto, dedicated to the presentation of the composer and his works and of the other two composers featured in the concert.

The event was presented thanks to a contribution by the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Alessandria (its president Giancarlo Pittatore was present) and it was organized by the Atalanta Fugiens Cultural Association.

Successo di pubblico e di critica, domenica 23 settembre, alla Sinagoga degli Argenti della Comunita' Ebraica di Casale Monferrato, dove si e' tenuto con strumenti d'epoca il concerto dell'Orchestra Classica Atalanta Fugiens -- diretta dal Maestro Vanni Moretto -- dedicato alle sinfonie del compositore settecentesco Antonio Brioschi (alcune composte a Casale e proprio per la Sinagoga) e di altri due precursori del classicismo, Fortunato Chelleri e Giovanni Battista Sammartini. Tutti compirono i primi esperimenti di scrittura di sinfonie classiche sin dalla fine degli anni Venti del 1700, offrendo un importante contributo alla genesi e allo sviluppo del genere sinfonico e avviando quel classicismo europeo che ebbe poi come protagonisti musicisti del calibro di Haydn, Mozart e Beethoven.

Il concerto e' stato preceduto da una conferenza molto chiara sul tema "Antonio Brioschi e i pionieri del Classicismo", tenuta da Vanni Moretto, dedicata alla presentazione della figura e delle opere di Brioschi e degli altri due autori delle sinfonie eseguite. In questa occasione, Moretto ha avuto modo di rivelare, per la prima volta alla stampa, che la leggendaria figura di Antonio Brioschi ha trovato riscontro in una lettera del Settecento, ritrovata in circostanze fortunose, che gia' in quegli anni ne mette in luce la fama e la perizia.

L'evento e' stato realizzato grazie al contributo della Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Alessandria (in Sinagoga era presente il presidente Giancarlo Pittatore), e' ideato e condotto dalla Associazione culturale Atalanta Fugiens su un percorso triennale.

ALFIANO NATTA NAMES LIBRARY FOR NESTORE DELU'

On Sunday, he civic library at Alfiano Natta was named in honor of Nestore Delu', a pharmacist born in the town in 1858, who was inventor of the formula for magnesia. Among those present were the grandchildren of Delu' -- Mario and Nello -- along with great-granddaughter Pinuccia, from Milan the Prof. Massimo Bartoccioli, regional councillor Marco Botta, provincial councillor Aldo Visca, schoolmaster Carla Rondano, historian Dionigi Roggero (who recalled the links between Alfiano and the writer Bonaviri and Silvio Pellico). Mayor Gabriella Paletti reminded those present that Nestore Delu' was part of the pantheon of "many Italians that excelled in scientific and artistic progress thanks to their ingenuity." An historical exhibit that will be on view in the town hall until Sept. 30 was also inaugurated.

Ad Alfiano Natta domenica la biblioteca civica e' stata intitolata a Nestore Delu', farmacista originario di Alfiano dove nacque nel 1858, inventore della formula della magnesia, fra i presenti i nipoti di Delu', Mario e Nello con la pronipote Pinuccia, da Milano il prof. Massimo Bartoccioli, il consigliere regionale Marco Botta, il consigliere provinciale Aldo Visca, la dirigente scolastica Carla Rondano, lo storico Dionigi Roggero (che ha ricordato anche i legami di Alfiano con lo scrittore Bonaviri e Silvio Pellico). Il sindaco Gabriella Paletti ha ricrodato che Nestore Delu' appartiene alla schiera di "tanti italiani che hanno primeggiato da sempre con il loro ingegno nel progresso scientifico e nell'arte". E' stata anche inaugurata una mostra storica che sara' apera fino al 30 settembre a palazzo comunale.

LA NOTTE ROSA AT CASALE WINE FEST DRAWS BIG CROWDS

La Notte Rosa at the Wine Festival, brought 50,000-60,000 tourists to Casale last weekend; a big number. Three hundred visited the Civic Museum and the Santo Stefano Tower, 150 were at the Mercalli meteorological conference, 750 participated in guided visits at Santa Caterina, more than 200 were at the musical "Madre Teresa" and at the reading in Santa Croce, more than 300 were at the lyric recital with guest singer Enrico Beruschi. There were also lines at the Pro Loco food stands at the Pavia market. Many were also at the church tours for the organ marathon, at visits at the Patagonia show in the lobby of the city hall, and there was a great appreciation for the events at Palazzo San Giorgio. Finally, thousands of people appreciated the concerts and exhibitions on the street and then there were the splendid fireworks that for half an hour illuminated the city, opening the celebrations dedicated to young people in the Piazza Castello. The Wine Festival continues in that piazza this weekend, Sept. 22-23.

La Notte Rosa abbinata alla Festa del Vino, han portato a Casale 50-60 mila turisti nel fine settimana. Qualche cifra. Trecento i visitatori al Museo Civico e alla Torre di Santo Stefano, 150 i presenti alla conferenza del meteorologo Mercalli, 750 i partecipanti alle visite guidate a Santa Caterina, oltre 200 le persone al musical "Madre Teresa" e alle letture in Santa Croce, oltre 300 al recital lirico con Enrico Beruschi come voce ospite. Code agli stand gastronomici delle Pro Loco al Pavia. Molti al tour nelle chiese per la maratona organistica, visite in certi momenti "contingentate" alla mostra (Patagonia) del foyer del Municipale, grandissimo apprezzamento per la spaghettata equa e solidale a Palazzo San Giorgio. Infine, migliaia le persone che hanno apprezzato i concerti e le esibizioni sulla strada, e, ancora, gli splendidi fuochi pirotecnici, che per mezz'ora hanno illuminato la citta' aprendo i festeggiamenti dedicati ai giovani in Piazza Castello. La Festa del vino fa il bis in piazza Castello sabato 22 e domenica 23.

CASALESE JOURNALISTS WIN AWARDS

At the Canottieri Circle in Casale Monferrato, two journalists from Sky were awarded: the Casalese Nicola Roggero and the unforgettable "voice" of "world night" for Italian soccer Fabio Caressa. The two attendants were awarded with the 1st "Luciano Percivalle" award, organizing manager of the historic Caligaris Tournament. The event, part of the program for the 21st "Bruno Borghini" tournament that attracts to Casale 500 young soccer players. The president of the Caligaris Tournament Association, Giorgio Bragato wanted to remember how important soccer is: "The kids need to be at the center of our activities. Soccer and sports in general should serve as schools of life. Roggero and Caressa are two important personalities who young people should look up to as examples."

At the event, many sport personalities as well as non attended: Giuseppino Coppo, ex president of Casale Soccer, Giorgio Sesia, president of referees of Casale, Piero Pulcina, president of Figc of Vercelli, the organizing staff of Borghini tournament, the managers of Ronzonese and the Monferrina Emi Ganora, the symbol of Mon.D.O., consortium of the development of the territory, represented by the its president Luigi Angelino (who has hoped to promote more tourism through larger sporting events), the vice mayor Gianni Crisafulli and the president of the Canottieri, Stefano Bagnera.

At the end of the evening, the two news reporters were awarded by the Borghini and Caligaris families and honored with typical products and a guided tour of Monferrato by the "Monferrina" in the name of the Mondo. Then for the two VIPs, signing autographs and taking many pictures.

Al Circolo Canottieri di Casale Monferrato sono stati premiati due dei giornalisti di punta di Sky: il casalese Nicola Roggero e l'indimenticabile "voce" della "notte mondiale" perl'Italia calcio Fabio Caressa. I due inviati sono stati insigniti con il 1mo premio "Luciano Percivalle", dirigente organizzatore dello storico Torneo Caligaris. L'evento, facente parte del programma del 21mo Torneo "Bruno Borghini" che attira a Casale 500 giovani giocatori di calcio. Il presidente dell'Associazione Torneo Caligaris Giorgio Bragato ha voluto ricordare quanto il calcio sia importante: "I ragazzi devono essere al centro delle nostre attivita', il calcio e lo sport in generale devono servire da scuola di vita. Roggero e Caressa sono due personaggi importanti da cui i giovani devono trarre esempio".

All'evento erano presenti molti personaggi dello sport e non: Giuseppino Coppo, ex presidente del Casale Calcio, Giorgio Sesia, presidente degli arbitri di Casale, Piero Pulcina, presidente della Figc di Vercelli, lo staff organizzativo del torneo Borghini, i dirigenti della Ronzonese e la Monferrina Emi Ganora, simbolo di Mon.D.O., consorzio che dello sviluppo del territorio, rappresentata dal suo presidente Luigi Angelino (ha auspicato una maggiore promozzione turistica anche attraverso i grossi eventi sportivi), il vice sindaco Gianni Crisafulli, il presidente delal Canottieri Stefano Bagnera.

Al termine della serata i due cronisti sono stati premiati dalle famiglie Borghini e Caligaris e omaggiate di prodotti tipici e guide turistiche del Monferrato dalla "Monferrina" a nome di Mon.D.O. Poi per i due vip la firma di autografi e tante foto.

QUARGNENTO'S BENZI GETS MUCH-DESERVED SHOW

At 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 22 in the splendid setting of the Villa Cuttica di Cassine in Quargnento, kindly lent by the Guidobono Cavalchini Garofoli family, in the presence of the mayor of the town, Luigi Penzi, Prof. Giuseppe Colli, Prof. Rino Tacchello amd Francesco Sottomano will present the show and accompanying monograph, "Giulio Benzi, 1907-2007 -- 100 years of Nostalgia for Quargnento," to mark the centennial of the birth of the artist from Quargnento, who died in 1955.

The show, which hangs until Oct. 14 in the Sala d'Arte Carlo Carra' in the town hall, will include 60 painting and 20 drawings and prints that will allow the viewer to follow 25 years of artistic expression by Benzi. It is a notable number of artworks to facilitate to know and re-evaluating the activity of a great artist that was decidedly unfortunate both during his short life and after his passing. In fact, despite his research and his oeuvre, he has not been sufficiently remembered by historians of Piemontese painting of his era.

Sabato 22 settembre alle ore 16 nella splendida cornice della Villa Cuttica di Cassine, in Quargnento, gentilmente concessa dalla Famiglia Guidobono Cavalchini Garofoli, alla presenza del sindaco di Quargnento Luigi Benzi, il prof. Giuseppe Colli con il prof. Rino Tacchella e Francesco Sottomano presenteranno la mostra e la monografia "Giulio Benzi 1907-2007 - cento anni di nostalgia per Quargnento", nell'anno del centenario della nascita dell'artista quargnentino (1907-1955).

Saranno esposte fino al 14 ottobre, nella Sala d'Arte Carlo Carra' presso il Palazzo del Comune, una sessantina di opere pittoriche ed una ventina tra disegni e monotipi che consentiranno di ripercorrere i 25 anni di espressione artistica del pittore. Un numero notevole di opere per conoscere e rivalutare l'attivita' di un ottimo artista decisamente sfortunato, sia durante la sua breve esistenza sia dopo il suo decesso. Infatti nonostante il pregevole apporto personale fornito dalla sua ricerca e dalla sua produzione, non e' stato sufficientemente ricordato dagli storici della pittura piemontese della prima meta' del Novecento.

SERIES BRINGS INTERNATIONAL PIANISTS TO THE MONFERRATO

Thanks to the kindness of the Sannazzaro-Natta counts, the Chapel of San Giacomo in the castle at Giarole Sunday afternoon hosted a splendid concert in the "Pianoechos '07" season in a fine atmosphere rich in historic and precious paintings.

Sergio Marchegiani, artistic director of the season of weekly international piano events in the Monferrato talked about the series before Korean pianist Jeoung-Won Suh immediately made her significant abilities known: a precise and decidedly strong technique, a valid phrasing and a particular ability to communicate immediately. And her public responded tangible.

Saturday, Sept. 22 at 9:15 p.m. in the Church of San Giacomo at Lu, Echo hosts a concert on the occasion of the presentation of the silver Premio Tasto in honor of the memory of teacher Maria Golia. Pianist Francesco Cipolletta will perform music by Schumann, Castagnoli (Casalese by adoption), Chopin and Grieg.

La Cappella di San Giacomo del castello di Giarole ha ospitato domenica pomeriggio, per gentile concessione dei conti Sannazzaro-Natta uno splendido concerto della stagione "Pianoechos '07", di pregio anche l'ambiente, ricco di quadri storici e preziosi.

Sergio Marchegiani, direttore artistico di questa rassegna , settimane pianistiche internazionali in Monferrato, ha illustrato gli aspetti della stagione poi Jeoung-Won Suh, pianista coreana, ha fatto intendere subito ai numerosi presenti le sue significative qualita': una tecnica precisa e decisamente solida, un valido fraseggio e una particolare ed immediata comunicabilita', ricevendone un tangibile riconoscimento dal pubblico.

Sabato 22 settembre, ore 21,15, a Lu nella Chiesa di San Giacomo Echos vede un concerto in occasione della consegna del Premio Tasto d'argento alla memoria della maestra Maria Golia. Pianista Francesco Cipolletta con musiche di Schumann, Castagnoli (casalese d'adozione, ndr.), Chopin, Grieg.

SACRED ART EXHIBITION A SUCCESS

On Sunday, a notable passionate audience, some of which arrived from far away, signalled the success of the already classic exhibition of sacred art in San Antonio di Rosignano (which was finalized with the restoration of the church). Among those present were the provincial president Paolo Filippi, president of the province's cultural commission Emanuele De Maria, regional councillor Rutallo and Mondo tourism consortium president Luigi Angelino. Welcoming everyone was mayor Graziella Montafia and vice mayor Cesare Chiesa.

Among the precious objects, exhibited for the first time, were two splendid paintings owned by the Rosignano community (for security reasons they have been deposited at the Dioces for 20 years): a "Crucifixion" by Lanino and a "Nativity" by Grammorseo.

Also, there were the six "Forex" reliefs, prepared by Manuela Meni and Claudio Colli for the 500th anniversary of the consecration of Rosignano's parish church, with tables on the development in the 14th century of the free commune (of Rosignano) and on the siege of 1640.

At the end of the show, the two researchers donated to the community a CD with digital reproductions of the rich collection of parchments in the communal archive.

Domenica un pubblico notevole di appassionati giunti anche da lontano ha segnato il successo della ormai classica esposizione d'arte sacra in S. Antonio di Rosignano (finalizzata ai restauri della stessa chiesa). Tra i presenti il presidente della provincia Paolo Filippi, il presidente della commissione provinciale cultura Emanuele De Maria, il consigliere regionale Rutallo, il presidente di Mondo Luigi Angelino. Facevano gli onori di casa il sindaco Graziella Montafia e il vice Cesare Chiesa.

Tra le preziosita', esposte per la prima volta, due splendidi quadri di proprieta' della comunitˆ rosignanese (per motivi di sicurezza sono depositati da venti anni in Diocesi): una "Crocifissione" del Lanino e una "Nativita'" del Grammorseo.

Di rilievo i sei "forex" preparati da Manuela Meni e Claudio Colli per il Cinquecentesimo di Consacrazione della Parrocchia di Rosignano con tavole sullo sviluppo nel Trecento del libero comune e sull'assalto del 1640.

I due ricercatori hanno al termine della mostra donato alla comunita' rosignanese un cd con la riproduzione digitale del ricco fondo di pergamene dell'archivio comunale.

COLMA CHAPEL GETS A PAINTING BACK

Sabato 25 Agosto alla Colma frazione di Rosignano nota per i lavori del garnde pittore divionista Angelo Morbelli si celebrera' la festa in onore di San Bartolomeo patrono della frazione.

Quest'anno, l'evento che caratterizza la festivita' e' il rientro presso la Cappella di San Bartolomeo della pala d'altare settecentesca, raffigurante San Bartolomeo, San Francesco da Paola e San Pancrazio, restaurata presso i prestigiosi laboratori Nicola di Aramengo a cura della benemerita Associazione "Amis d'la Curma".

Datata 1715 e firmata da Girolamo Tassistro, fu eseguita in Novi Ligure su ordine del Conte Guidobaldo Giuliani di Roma, devoto di San Francesco da Paola, che dal 1713 al 1735 godette del Beneficio di San Pancrazio legato all'Abbazia Benedettina esistente ove ora e' il castello di San Bartolomeo.

La cerimonia sara' presieduta da monsignor Germano Zaccheo Vescovo di Casale Monferrato.

Per la comunita' della Colma e dintorni e' un momento estremamente importante che vede concludersi con successo il restauro della tela, durato diversi mesi e per il quale i soci e la popolazione si sono impegnati in svariate iniziative per raccogliere i fondi necessari.

La cerimonia di Sabato 25 Agosto avra' inizio alle ore 17 presso la Cappella di San Bartolomeo alla Colma di Rosignano con la ricollocazione nella sua sede della tela restituita all'originale splendore. Fara' seguito la cerimonia eucaristica quindi la processione lungo la frazione Colma, benedizione e congedo. Al termine l'Associazione Amis d'la Curma offrira' a tutti gli intervenuti un buffet presso il giardino di Villa Maria, residenza e studio del pittore Angelo Morbelli.

La Colma si trova distesa sul fianco esposto a sud di una collina da cui prende il nome e al cui vertice si erge un castello. E' praticamente rimasta immutata dal secolo scorso, infatti ancora oggi le stesse case si susseguono ai lati dell'unica strada che la attraversa e queste case, appoggiate l'una all'altra, nascondono al passante i cortili dove si svolgeva la vita contadina di un tempo. A tutt'oggi "Villa Maria" e' di proprieta' degli eredi del pittore.

Le case sono costruite in tufo (canton) e mattoni, sono quasi tutte provviste di cantine scavate nel tufo e dotate di infernot, il luogo dove venivano custodite le bottiglie migliori destinate a invecchiare, come ricordo di eventi straordinari (ad esempio una nascita).

I "canton" provengono dalle cave di tufo della stessa Colma e gli Amis intendono valorizzare questo patrimonio con mostra fotografica e degli attrezzi e una relazione a cura del geologo dott. Sassone. Si pensa anche, in accordo con l'Eco Museo della Pietra da Cantoni di Cella Monte presieduto da Giuseppe Arditi, di rendere fruibile ai turisti un breve tratto delle "cave Angelino."

WORLD GONE MAD

Articles in the Piemontese press in July addressed a worrisome problem for local grape farmers and winemakers. Due to climate craziness, the vendemmia or grape harvest would take place in August this year. That's a month or so earlier than normal. Around the same time the international media reported on French winegrowers buying up land in southern England because due to the climate changes the future of wine appears to lie there and not in Italy and France.

Meanwhile, the immediate problem in Piemonte was that, as in the rest of Italy, everyone heads to the seaside on vacation in August and available hands for the vendemmia were predicted to be very, very scarce. We put in calls to some in the business asking for an update now that the predicted vendemmia period has passed and the first response is a promising one.

"Even if the predictions were for a very early start," says Domenico Ravizza of Vicara, " we have just begun the harvest of early white grapes and pinot nero. For the barbera and grignolino, we expect to start the first week in September. The grapes are beautiful and we hope that the weather will help us.

A PIECE OF THE MONFERRATO IN VENICE

A piece of the Monferrato left Venice speechless on Tuesday, July 24 on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of the birth of playwright Carlo Goldoni. It was a significant piece, seeing as it was the presentation of an unpublished work in one of the most important theaters of the city and was applauded by a sea of critics and the public. The bit of the Monferrato in question is called Creativity and is a cultural center that has a home on Via Roma in Casale, alongside others in Bologna and Milan.

The driving forces of the association are Laura Strambi and Franco Gervasio: she a Casale fashion designer and he a director. The theater company united fashion, music and visual arts and between the Strambi and Gervasio ideas are never lacking. So, after having readied "Dreaming G" in Istanbul, here they are cementing their reputation with a new adventure bringing the life of Goldoni to the stage in the city of his birth.

So "Monsieur Goldini" was born, with text by Pietro Favari, directed by Gervasio, costumes by Strambi and Ugo Gregoretti as Goldoni. Tuesday evening everything was on view in the delicious rococo setting of the Teatro Goldoni not far from Rialto. "Monsieur Goldini" is a work that is capable of being both fun and thought-provoking. The music by Paolo Conte is performed live by a wind ensemble.

Creativity then organized a gala evening at Palazzo Malipiero at which Casale's Krumiri Rossi cookies were served alongside Venetian specialties.

The success was repeated the following day at the iron warehouses at the Arsenal. The performance of "Dreaming G," based entirely on the rapport between Goldoni and food drew hundreds of people, but especially youth from the nearby university and Krumiri were once again on offer. Goldoni would have appreciated it.

Un pezzo di Monferrato ha stupito Venezia martedi' 24 luglio in occasione dei 300 anni della nascita di Carlo Goldoni. Un pezzo significativo, visto che e' stato il motore di un'opera inedita in uno dei piu' importanti teatri della citta' ed applaudito da una marea di critici e pubblico. Questo angolo del Monferrato si chiama Creativity ed e' un centro culturale che ha sede, oltre che a Bologna e Milano anche in via Roma a Casale.

L'anima dell'associazione sono Laura Strambi e Franco Gervasio: fashion designer casalese lei, regista lui. Il teatro unisce moda, musica e arti visive e ai due le idee non mancano. Cosi' dopo aver allestito Dreaming G (Sognando Goldoni) a Istambul, eccoli cimentarsi in una nuova avventura per portare la vita di Goldoni in scena nella citta' che gli ha dato i natali.

Nasce Monsieur Goldoni testo di Pietro Favari, regia di Gervasio costumi di Laura ed Ugo Gregoretti a interpretare Goldoni. Martedi' sera tutti in scena nella deliziosa bomboniera Rococo' del Teatro Goldoni, poco distante da Rialto. Monsieur Goldoni e' una pieces capace di essere divertente e di far riflettere. Le musiche sono di Paolo Conte eseguite dal vivo da un ensemble di fiati.

Creativity ha poi organizzato una serata di gala a Palazzo Malipiero: assaggi di specialita' veneziane a cui si sono aggiunti anche i Krumiri Rossi di Casale.

Il giorno dopo bis di successo con Dreaming G rappresentato ai magazzini del ferro all'Arsenale. La performance tutta basata sul rapporto tra Goldoni e il cibo ha attirato centinaia di persone soprattutto giovani del campus e anche qui Krumiri l'hanno fatta da padrone. Goldoni avrebbe apprezzato.

GRANDE SUCCESSO DEL "TORCHIO D'ORO"

The Torchio d'Oro wine competition organized by the Comune of Casale along with the Luparia Institute of San Martino di Rosignano, the awards ceremony of which was held Sunday, July 22 at Cormayeur, in the shadow of Monte Bianco, was a great success. The perfect location for the promotion of tourism was chosen by organizers of the event, agriculture assessor Enrico Scoccati and docent Ferruccio Battaglia, and television journalist Lamberto Sposini, who saw it as a testimonial. There were 49 producers whose wines reached or surpassed the 85/100 level according to rigorous judging. Seventeen received the diploma and the medal of excellence.

The absolute winner of this edition was Marco Canato of the "cascina" Baldea in Vignale who reached the highest levels with no fewer than 9 wines, leading him to be dubbed "The Oscar of the Torchio d'Oro 2007." Also present at the awards presentation were provincial president Paolo Filippi, agriculture assessor Davide Sandalo, Casale's mayor Paolo Mascarino and assessor Riccardo Calvo, scholastic director at Luparia Roberto Gandini, president of the Mondo tourism consortium Luigi Angelino, vice president of the communal council Maria Grazia Bocca, assessor Antonio Grosso from the Comune of Cormayeur and the present of the Muletta Consortium, Sala mayor Claudio Saletta and the Monferrina (portrayed by Letizia Ferrando). There were many tourists that stopped at the "Sapori Monferrini" display to learn about the excellence of the Monferrato Casalese.

Grande successo del "Torchio d'Oro", concorso enologico organizzato da Comune di Casale in collaborazione con l'Istituto Luparia di S. Martino di Rosignano, la cui premiazione si e' tenuta a Courmayeur, sotto il Monte Bianco, domenica 22 luglio. Una perfetta location per fare promozione turistica scelta dai registi dell'evento, l'assessore all'agricoltura Enrico Scoccati e il docente Ferruccio Battaglia, che ha visto come testimonial il giornalista televisivo Lamberto Sposini. Sono stati 49 i produttori i cui vini che hanno superato la soglia degli 85/100 secondo la rigorosa selezione della giuria, 17 le aziende che hanno ricevuto il diploma e la medaglia dell'eccellenza.

Il vincitore assoluto di questa edizione e' stato Marco Canato della cascina Baldea di Vignale che ha raggiunto e superato gli 85/100 con ben 9 vini, aggiudicandosi l' "Oscar del Torchio d'Oro 2007". DUOMO INSPIRES GOZZELINO'S MUSIC

"Sonic Architecture" is the title of the unusual musical composition of maesdtro Federico Gozzelino who has interpreted the architecture of the San'Evasio Cathedral in Casale Monferrato -- on the 900th anniversary of its consecration -- with a composition for organ and piano. The work -- a splendid CD -- was presented Saturday in Cerrina at the I.N.A.C. headquarters with an introduction by the president Anselmo Villata. Commentaries by music critic Alberto Angelino and by the maestro followed. "Gozzelino is the artist that knew how to remain an artisan," said Angelino. Gozzelino found his muse in the Cathedral at a special time; the 900th anniversary celebration.

He took 43 minutes and 9 seconds to tell the story of the Duomo, from which the author wanted to extract an emotion, the essence of the building without losing sight of the objective. "In his artistic creation," said the musicologist, "he didn't go in search of the material of which the sounds are made through the reading of musical notes, but the emotive impact, the predominant characteristic of the Gozzelino style, a peculiar style that isn't found anywhere else in the vast musical panorama." The theme is the progression, a mounting path that from inside the grandiose central nave, expressed by the organ, reaches a clean jump in the essential, reproducing the purest essence of the narthex, executed by the piano, and so goes the sonic trip through the Duomo. It has already been announced that Oct. 13 will mark the first concert performance of "Sonic Architecture" by Massimo Gabba.

"Architetture sonore", e' il titolo della singolare opera musicale del maestro Federico Gozzelino di interpretare l'architettura della Cattedrale di Sant'Evasio di Casale, in occasione dei 900 anni dalla consacrazione con una sua composizione per organo e pianoforte. Il lavoro -- uno splendido CD -- e' stato presentato sabato a Cerrina presso la sede I.N.A.C. con l'introduzione del presidente Anselmo Villata, alla quale sono seguite le considerazioni del critico musicale Alberto Angelino ed i commenti del maestro. "Gozzelino e' l'artista che ha saputo restare artigiano" ha esordito Angelino Gozzellino ha visto come musa la Cattedrale, in un momento particolare il festeggiamento dei 900 anni dalla consacrazione.

Quarantatre minuti e nove secondi per raccontare il Duomo di Casale, dove l'autore ha voluto estrapolare da un'emozione, l'essenziale senza perdere di vista l'obiettivo. "Nella sua realizzazione artistica -- ha evidenziato il musicologo -- non va ricercata la materia di cui sono fatti i suoni attraverso la lettura delle note musicali ma, l'impatto emotivo, quale caratteristica predominante dello stile gozzeliniano che, nel vasto panorama musicale non trova la sua peculiare collocazione". Il tema e' la progressione, un cammino crescente che dall'interno della grandiosita' della navata centrale espressa dall'organo, compie un balzo netto nell'essenziale, riproducendo l'essenza piu' pura del nartece eseguita al pianoforte e, cosi' via nel resto del viaggio sonoro all'interno del Duomo.E' gia' stata fissata per sabato 13 ottobre la prima esecuzione dal vivo del concerto "Architetture Sonore" in Cattedrale che vedra' esecutore Massimo Gabba.

CASALE SALUTES DON FUMARCO

On Saturday, June 30, Mayor Paolo Mascarino officially conferred honorary citizenship of Casale Monferrato to Don Pierino Fumarco, class of 1922, the priest who for 40 years has led the parish of the Duomo. The ceremony took place at Palazzo Sangiorgio and among those present were the President of the Province of Alessandria Paolo Filippi, numerous regional and city assessors and councillors, Mayor of Mirabello (the birthplace of Don Pierino) Marco Demartini, the vicar general of the Diocses Mons. Antonio Gennaro and Comunal Council President Maria Merlo. Mayor Mascarino recounted Don Fumarco's participation in the growth of the city.

Sabato 30 giugno il sindaco Paolo Mascarino ha conferito ufficialmente la cittadinanza onoraria di Casale Monferrato a Don Pierino Fumarco, classe 1922, sacerdote che per 40 anni ha retto la parrocchia del Duomo. La cerimonia e' avvenuta a palazzo Sangiorgio. Presenti anche il presidente della Provincia di Alessandria Paolo Filippi, numerosi assessori, consiglieri provinciali e comunali, il sindaco di Mirabello (paese natale del festeggiato) Marco Demartini, il vicario generale della Diocesi mons. NOTTE BIANCA A BIG SUCCESS

The first Notte Bianca, organized this past weekend by the city of Casale, was an extraordinary success, with nearly 50,000 on hand. Piazza Castello, the historic city center, the courtyards, the streets as far as Piazza Dante, the commercial zones; they all had a concentration of people who came from across Piedmont and Lombardy. Success also for the youth festival at the Pavia market in the center of Casale, for the San Domenico concert with 900 spectators, for the Synagogue festival, the Folkermess, the Ramezzana show at Palazzo Caire, for the Duomo, the open museums, the 300 dancers from the dance school in Casale ... It was a crowd that also rewarded bars and shops that kept their shutters up until dawn. There is talk of repeating the night-long event on Saturday, Sept. 8.

Un successo straordinario, con quasi 50.000 presenze alla Prima Notte Bianca organizzata dal Comune tra sabato e domenica. Piazza Castello, il centro storico, i cortili, le vie fino a Piazza Dante, le zone dei centri commerciali, tutto ha riscosso una concentrazione di persone giunte da Piemonte e Lombardia. Successo per la Festa giovane al mercato Pavia, il concerto in San Domenico con 900 spettatori, quello in Sinagoga, Folkermesse, la mostra di Ramezzana a palazzo Caire, il Duomo e i musei aperti, le trecento danzatrici delle scuole di ballo casalesi ... Una folla che ha premiato anche bar e negozi che hanno tenuto le saracinesche aperte fino all'alba. Si pensa di ripetere l'evento sabato 8 settembre.

ARMONIE IN VALCERRINA SEASON OPENS

Armonie (Harmonies) in Valcerrina opened its 2007 musical season with great auspices. Saturday afternoon at Sant'Antonio at Serra di Odalengo Grande for the inaugural concert in a rich season of 13 concerts that closes in December. The complex is well adapted to an open air concert, offering adequate acoustics out in nature. Warm applause and cries of "encore" for the ensemble of brass and woodwinds that made up the prestigious Octet of the Orchestra Giuseppe Verdi of Milan. Kicking it all off, Paolo Bardazza, president of Idea Valcerrina, the group that organized it all, saluted those present, including regional councilor Aldo Visca with the head of the department for the province of Alessandria Agostino Gatto, Casale culture assessor Riccardo Calvo, Mondo tourism consortium president Luigi Angelino, gnerals Ennio Lanati and Pietro Quaranti and some local mayors. "We are pleased to be able to ensure a high level of concerts this year that will feature celebrated pianist and wind instrument musicians," Bardazza said, making use of the occasion to recall that the proceeds of the concerts will benefit the restoration of artworks in the area. After the concert, many of the spectators visited the sacresty of the church to admire the "paliotto,"an excellent 18th century work attributed to Solari, returned to its original splendor having been recovered from the nearby church of Rio Valle.

Armonie in Valcerrina ha aperto la stagione musicale 2007 sotto i migliori auspici. Sabato pomeriggio, a Sant'Antonio della Serra di Odalengo Grande per il concerto inaugurale di una ricca stagione di tredici concerti che si chiude a dicembre. Calorosi applausi e richiesta di bis per l'ensemble di ottoni e legni che costituivano il prestigioso Ottetto dell'Orchestra Giuseppe Verdi di Milano , complesso molto adatto ad un concerto all'aperto, potendo offrire sonorita' adeguate all'ambiente. In apertura, il presidente di Idea Valcerrina, l'ente organizzatore, Paolo Bardazza ha salutato gli intervenuti fra cui il consigliere provinciale Aldo Visca con il capo di gabinetto della provincia d Alessandria Agostino Gatti, l'assessore alla Cultura al comune di Casale Riccardo Calvo, il presidente del consorzio turistico Mondo Luigi Angelino, i generali Ennio Lanati e Pietro Quaranti e alcuni sindaci. "Sono lieto di potervi assicurare che il livello dei concerti che andiamo a proporre quest'anno e' molto alto ed avra' quali protagonisti celebri esecutori specie di pianoforte e strumenti a fiato" ha assicurato Bardazza che con l'occasione ha ricordato che i proventi dei concerti sono per i restauri di opere d'arte dellazona e in effetti, al termine del concerto, gran parte degli spettatori si sono recati nella sacrestia dell'attigua chiesa parrocchiale ed hanno ammirato il paliotto, eccellente opera settecentesca attribuita al Solari, riportato allo splendore delle origini recuperato dalla vicina chiesa di Rio Valle.

MONFERRINI POETRY & MUSIC CD COMING

After many months of work, we are happy to announce the the first Monferrini.com CD will be ready for release this summer. "Reis Munfrin-e" has 30 poems and songs in the Monferrato dialects of the Piemonteis language, almost all recited or performed by the authors. Included are poems by Nina Prati of Murisengo, Luciano Ravizza of Castell'Alfero, Alfredo Rota of Mirabello, Luigi Reposo of Ozzano, Il Canzoniere Monferrino of Moncalvo, Ariondassa and I Sunador Dal Ravi and Massimo Brusasco of Fubine. The poems -- some which have musical accompaniment by Sonia Cestonaro and Rinaldo Doro -- (and some of the songs) were specially recorded for the CD. The CD booklet will have texts of all the works in English, Italian and Piemonteis, along with lovely photos by G.P. Morano.

The project couldn't have been completed without the hard work of G.P. and of Vincenzo "Chacho" Marchelli and the kind cooperation all the poets and musicians involved. Lastly, but not leastly, Piemontesi nel Mondo of Northern California's contribution was joined by donations from Goloso Gelateria Cafe (and the De Giovanni Family) in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, Mary Kay Buratto, Dr. David Paris, Mary Gilpatrick, Anna Pitzo and Bob Ruggieri -- all of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Still others, like Claudia Pessarelli and Lucia Soldati, assisted with translations.

Watch this space for details on how to order the CD once it is ready (we're hoping for July!) and we will hopefully post a few videos of the artists on the site, too.

Our aim to create a series of such CDs capturing the culture of the Monferrato for the Monferrini across the world and for posterity. We'd love to be able to do one of folktales, one with lullabies and nursery rhymes, etc. Good sales of the first one will hopefully get the ball rolling.

DUOMO LIGHT SHOW CLOSES

Just after midnight, on Sunday, "Un Duomo, una citta', 900 anni in scena," a historical night show came to an end. This striking, itinerant son et lumiere show took place to celebrate the Duomo's 900 years. The show -Ð organized by the Municipality as Riso & Rose's last act -- starts at 9:30 p.m. under the Porta del Castello. The joker, the fire-eater and the flag-wavers begin, then there are armigeri fights in front of the Guild Hall, and finally music, singing and dancing under the Town Hall with the Anima Mundi, directed by Patrizia Barberis (all very good). At the Via Lanza Arch, the Captain of War Facino Cane makes his appereance and retrieves Saint Evasio's memorabilia, which will be later returned to the town Bishop (in this case, the real Bishop, Mons. Zaccheo). William III, the grand Marquis, and, on the piazza's stage, Stefano Guzzo and his "Civil Conversazione" are commemorated. At the Duomo, there is ancient music and then the Medieval banquet.

Si e' concluso poco dopo mezzanotte di domenica "Un Duomo, una citta', 900 anni in scena", spettacolo notturno di rievocazione storica, un son et lumiere itinerante suggestivo per i novecento anni del Duomo. Lo spettacolo -- organizzato dal Comune come ultimo atto di Riso & Rose -- inizia alle 21,30 sotto la porta del castello. Partono, giullare, mangiafuoco e gli sbandieratori, poi di fronte al municipale lotte di armigeri, sotto la torre civica musiche, canti e danze con l'Anima Mundi diretto da Patrizia Barberis (tutti bravi), all'arco di via Lanza appare il capitano di ventura Facino Cane che recupera le reliquie di Sant'Evasio che verranno restituite piu' avanti al vescovo della citta' (in questo caso "impersonato" dal vescovo vero mons. Zaccheo), piu' avanti si evoca Guglielmo VIII, il gran marchese, sul palco della piazza si ricorda Stefano Guazzo e la sua "Civil Conversazione". In Duomo brani musicali antichi poi banchetto medievale.

RISO E ROSE 2007 IS UNDERWAY

Riso e Rose in Monferrato, coordinated by the Mondo tourism consortium and involving 30 towns in the area is underway. The grand finale takes place June 3 in connection with the celebration of the 900th anniversary of the duomo in Casale. In the first two weekends there was a large influx of tourists, and headcounts suggested 33,670 (19,400 and 24,270), thanks to a big promotional effort, including a nice report by Giuliano Corti on Tg3. Of international stature was the presentation at Coniolo of the "Rosa Monferrato" brought from England by Helen Caine of David Austin Roses Limited. Also at Coniolo's Villa Vidua there was the show, "Viaggi, Viaggitori, Sogni," with 200 fantastic animals by G. Tamburelli. Also notable was the presentation of research on links to the past by the Circolo Marchesi di Monferrato. Last Sunday, for example, they revived the castle at Pontestura with the Crusades, and Sunday, June 3 will focus on the Gonzaga at Frassineto. The castle at Camino -- the oldest in the Monferrato -- was shimmering. At Sala (beyond the "usual" oeno-gastronomic treats) 19th century ceramics were presented, along with a restored Caccia painting.
